Come and sing: a weekly opportunity to sing with others

  • Music Department, Armstrong Building Newcastle University Newcastle upon Tyne, England, NE1 7RU United Kingdom (map)

A Newcastle Sings initiative, Come & Sing is a choir designed to act as continuous CPD for both teachers, music students and choir leaders, and those who would quite simply like to come and sing together with others on a weekly basis. Come & Sing will offer the chance to spend an hour singing each week where external worries can be left at the door and participants can enjoy making music with others in a relaxing and supportive environment.

Newcastle Sings CPD Day for School-Based Staff, June 2022

One focus will be to work through repertoire which teachers can use in a classroom context without having to commit to buying something before trialling it. Each week, new pieces will be introduced (as well as revisiting old ones) with some weeks focusing on specific seasonal points in the year to help plan musical concerts and events in schools or in the community. You can see the schedule below to get an idea of the kind of things we will be trying in Autumn 2022.

Because we’re all exceptionally busy, this is not a group which requires a large commitment. Anyone is welcome to come to as many rehearsals as you can and the aim is not to specifically work towards performances, unless the group would like to and feels able.  Come & Sing aims to be a space where people can sing together and develop their skills as they would like. As part of that, there will also be opportunities for anyone who would like to work on their conducting and leadership skills within the group.

Schedule:  Autumn 1

September 27th: Sing a Song of Joy! Exploring songs which spark joy and leave you with a smile on your face, focusing on Stuart Overington’s collection, Build a Bridge

October 4th: So here it is, Merry…! One of the biggest musical times of the year requires some of the best music there is. A chance to explore new sacred and secular pieces for concerts and shows.

October 11th: Round and round. Rounds are one of the best tools in our arsenal, especially when introducing children to part-singing without them even realising.

October 18th: Snap, Crackle and Pop. Flexible arrangements of pop songs which can work in a multitude of groups and different voice parts, trialled and tested by the Newcastle Youth Choir Project.
